Evidence-Based Practice Learning Library
Evidence-based practice, also referred to as EBP, is the method of asking clinically relevant questions and then critically appraising and integrating findings into care delivery to improve patient outcomes.
EBP is a foundational principle that guides all work at ONS. Below is a sampling of evidence-based ONS resources along with external resources on EBP. We hope you can use these resources to support your EBP journey.
There are many EBP models and frameworks, but in general the steps include the following:
- Identify a problem and ask a clinical question (write a PICOT question to guide your literature search).
- Search for the evidence that addresses the question.
- Critically appraise the evidence, integrate with patient data/preferences and clinical expertise to make a practice decision or change.
- Integrate into practice.
- Evaluate the outcomes of the practice change.
- Disseminate your results.

ONS Guidelines
Clinical practice guidelines provide evidence-based symptom management recommendations for patient care. Guidelines incorporate published research with expert consensus on the certainty of the evidence, the balance of benefits and harms and patient preferences and values. Created with rigorous methodology, the guideline recommendations can be utilized by nurses and other oncology health care professionals, patients, and policy makers with a goal of improving care for patients with cancer.
