Can you believe that as the 47th Annual ONS Congress in Anaheim, CA, was wrapping up in April 2022, planning and session development for the 48th Annual ONS Congress for 2023 had already started? Have you ever wondered who is behind the planning? Have you ever thought about how educational sessions are created or how speakers are selected? Here’s a peek behind the scenes.
Each year, volunteer nurses on the ONS Congress Planning Team plan, implement, and evaluate the conference’s educational offerings. Planning Team members determine topics, create titles, descriptions, objectives, and identify and select speakers. Sounds easy, right? Well, Planning Team members work tirelessly to develop educational content that addresses current practice issues and the ONS Congress audience’s needs with an overall goal to create a conference applicable to all nurses featuring a diverse mix of speakers from different geographic locations, institutions, and specialties. One fun exercise during our planning meetings is using an interactive map to drop a pin as we select speakers, which offers a visual of geographic locations to make sure we have a wide-reaching spread.
To capture that diversity in educational sessions, Planning Team members review a vast array of resources—including published journal articles and abstracts, past conference presenters, and professional networks—to identify relevant topics and expert speakers. Believe us when we say, “Your hard work has not gone unnoticed!” A vital component in all of this is your dedication to submitting topic and speaker ideas, completing evaluations, and posting in the ONS Communities.
All in all, ONS Congress is truly a conference created by nurses, for nurses. On behalf of the 2023 ONS Congress Planning Team, we thank you for your contribution in helping the Planning Team identify pertinent topics and speakers. We look forward to creating a conference that revitalizes your practice, rejuvenates your mind and spirit, and refocuses your oncology nursing profession with exciting educational sessions.
