Caregiver/Partner Interventions

Caregiver/partner interventions refer to provision of a specific intervention to a patient’s informal caregiver, spouse, or partner in an attempt to affect the patient's symptoms. Caregiver/partner interventions involving education and enhancing partner adjustment to the patient’s illness have been studied in patients with cancer in an attempt to manage patient anxiety.

Caregiver Training and Skill Development

Caregiver training and skill development is the provision of education and training to develop technical and other caregiving skills and to enhance knowledge involved in assuming the caregiver role.

Carbamazepine

Carbamazepine is used alone or with other medications in the treatment of certain types of seizures. Carbamazepine also is used to treat trigeminal neuralgia (a condition that causes facial nerve pain) and is an anticonvulsant that works by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Carbamazepine is available as a tablet, a chewable tablet, an extended-release tablet, an extended-release capsule, and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. Carbamazepine has been studied related to chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) and peripheral neuropathy.

Camellia and Wheat Extract

Camellia sinensis leaf extract is derived from green tea and has antioxidative properties. Palmitoyl hydrolyzed wheat protein is a condensation product of palmitic acid chloride and hydrolyzed wheat protein. This protein is believed to have healing properties for skin and mucosa. Camellia sinensis leaf extract and palmitoyl hydrolyzed wheat protein are active ingredients in Baxidil Onco®, which has been studied in patients with cancer to treat oral mucositis.

CAM2028

CAM2028 is a bioadhesive barrier-forming lipid solution that can be used in the oral cavity to protect tissue that has been damaged by radiation. CAM2028 may or may not include benzydamine.

Calendula Officinalis

Calendula is a perennial herb (Calendula officinalis) in the daisy family. Topical use involves use as a tincture or cream. Calendula contains high amounts of flavonoids, plant-based antioxidants that protect the body against cell-damaging free radicals. It seems to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial effects, as well as healing properties. The healing properties are believed to occur because of increased blood flow to the affected area. Calendula is also available to take orally.

Calcium Phosphate Mouth Rinse/Caphosol

Oral rinses containing calcium and phosphate have been studied in patients with cancer for effects on oral mucositis.

Caphosol is a calcium phosphate solution resembling human saliva that is intended to replace the normal ionic and pH balance in the oral cavity. It has been used as a mouth rinse to moisten, lubricate, and clean the oral mucosa, tongue, and throat. Caphosol has been evaluated for mucositis.

Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers are medications commonly used to treat high blood pressure. The potential effect of these medications on development of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy was studied.

Calcium and Magnesium Infusion

The infusion of calcium and magnesium via IV during neurotoxic chemotherapy cycles has been evaluated for its effect on the prevention of peripheral neuropathy. It has been thought that acute neuropathic symptoms may be a result of certain chemotherapy agents bonding to calcium. Some neurotoxic agents also may result in hypomagnesemia. Infusion of calcium gluconate and magnesium sulfate immediately before and after chemotherapy administration has been evaluated for an effect in the prevention of peripheral neuropathy.

Calcium Aluminosilicate Clay

Calcium aluminosilicate clay is a compound of aluminosilicate and calcium ions that may absorb chemotherapeutic drugs and metabolites as well as inflammatory proteins. This may minimize radiation-induced damage to the intestinal epithelium and radiation-induced diarrhea.
